The Canton of Schaffhausen charges a flat tourist tax of CHF 2.50 per person per overnight stay in paid accommodation. Covered accommodation includes hotels, motels, guesthouses, health resorts, holiday houses and apartments, private rooms, campsites, group accommodation, youth hostels, dormitories, bed-and-breakfast establishments, accommodation offered through online platforms, and farms offering overnight stays. The rate is set by cantonal decree and may be changed by the Cantonal Council.
Exempt: accommodation of youth organisations, disability organisations and school classes, and children up to and including their 12th birthday (i.e. until the end of age 12).
Paid short-term accommodation offered through online platforms and holiday-apartment rentals is subject to the tourist tax and to the guest-reporting requirement. Hosts must keep guest records and provide the required data to the police. For Airbnb bookings in Schaffhausen, Airbnb has collected and remitted CHF 2.50 per person per night automatically since 1 January 2019; the host therefore does not collect that tax or submit the corresponding tax reports through the cantonal portal for those bookings.
